Know Before You Go

Do I need a visa to visit Palau?

Easy entry for most visitors

Palau grants a 30‑day visa on arrival to citizens of most countries, as long as your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date. Extensions of up to 90 days are possible for a fee at the Immigration Office in Koror. While the process is straightforward, it’s always wise to check the latest entry requirements before you travel, especially if you hold a non‑standard passport or plan to stay longer.

When is the best time to visit Palau?

Year‑round beauty, with a sweet spot

Palau’s warm, tropical climate means it’s beautiful year‑round, with temperatures averaging 27-30°C. The dry season, from December to April, offers the calmest seas and best underwater visibility-perfect for diving, snorkeling, and island-hopping. The wet season (May to November) sees occasional heavy showers, usually short‑lived, and fewer tourists, which can make for a more private experience. Diving remains excellent in all seasons.

Is Palau safe for travelers?

Peaceful, friendly, and welcoming

Palau is renowned for its exceptionally safe environment and genuinely hospitable locals who warmly welcome visitors from around the world. The crime rates are among the lowest you'll find anywhere, making it an ideal destination for peaceful exploration. As with any travel destination, simply keep an eye on your personal items - a standard practice that ensures worry-free adventures. For water enthusiasts, the dynamic ocean currents create some of the world's most spectacular diving and snorkeling conditions - joining professional guided tours ensures you'll safely experience these incredible underwater wonders to their fullest.

Do I need to take health precautions?

Stay healthy and enjoy your trip worry‑free

Palau is generally safe health‑wise, but mosquitoes can carry dengue fever, so insect repellent is a must. Drink bottled or purified water and avoid ice from unverified sources. Vaccinations for hepatitis A and B, tetanus, and typhoid are recommended for extended stays. Medical facilities in Koror are adequate for basic needs, but serious conditions may require evacuation to Taiwan or the Philippines, so consider travel insurance with medical coverage.

What currency is used in Palau?

Simple-no currency exchange needed for US visitors

Palau uses the US Dollar (USD), making it easy for American visitors and straightforward for others. Credit cards with the exception of AMEX cards are widely accepted in hotels, resorts, and restaurants in Koror, but smaller shops, markets, and remote islands often only accept cash. ATMs are available in Koror but can be scarce elsewhere, so plan ahead if you’re going off the beaten path.
